Pregnancy can bring about many changes to a woman’s body, but for some, it can worsen body image issues. A recent study found that women with body dysmorphia during pregnancy reported lower quality of life and struggled with their body image more than those without the condition.
The study showed that women with body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) experienced physical and psychological insecurities, such as concerns about weight gain, appearance, and body shape. These worries were most prominent during the first and third trimesters, affecting their daily life and even leading to avoiding activities or certain clothing.
The research also pointed out that pregnant women with body dysmorphia symptoms might have a harder time adjusting to the changes their bodies go through, and they might feel more criticized by others.
Researchers suggest that better support and interventions are needed to help women with BDD during pregnancy, improving both their mental and physical well-being.
